How much do websites cost per month?
This post is dedicated to providing an estimate of how much do websites cost per month.
I’ve created a video specifically on this topic, where we dive into Google to uncover the real costs of maintaining a website each month.
As a web designer with over 10 years of experience, I’ll add some insights from my own, including a new approach to web design that allows you to host your websites without any monthly fees.
If you want to explore this subject further, check out this Forbes article I referenced in the video.
So, how much do websites cost per month?
If you haven’t watched the video above, I’ll let you know upfront that the average monthly costs are around $20 per month. This figure covers the basics needed to keep your website online:
- Domain: $1/month
- Hosting: $5/month
- Website creation tool: $15/month
Total: ~$20/month
It’s important to note that many online services offer promotional prices for the first few months only, so it’s wise to double-check the ongoing costs.
Also, this estimate doesn’t include possible theme licenses or professional help from a web designer to tailor the project to your needs.
But do all websites require a monthly fee?
Here’s where I’d like to challenge your expectations…
Not necessarily! Imagine a website with content so optimized that it costs mere cents to host.
Let me explain.
Recently in my web development journey, I came across the concept of static websites.
Unlike WordPress websites that use PHP for page logic and then output the necessary HTML, static sites are composed solely of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, images, and content delivered directly to the user without server-side processing.
This approach makes them ultra-secure, faster, and importantly, cheaper to host.
All my websites are hosted on a Content Delivery Network (CDN) called BunnyCDN.
I highly recommend them; I use their services daily, and their support is superb. With a CDN, your website’s content is shared across multiple servers worldwide.
When a user accesses your page, it retrieves the files from the nearest server, ensuring fast load times. It also practically guarantees 99.9% uptime because if one server goes down, another seamlessly takes over, keeping your website online.
Benefits of static sites on a good CDN:
- Increased security
- Faster load times
- Market-leading uptime
To further reduce the website’s overall size, I process images into the WebP format, which is lighter while maintaining quality.
In the video, I showcase a Lighthouse report on one of my website’s pages, demonstrating a perfect score of 100 in all four metrics:
- Performance
- Accessibility
- Best practices
- SEO
Before becoming so focused on optimization, I never imagined achieving 100 in all these metrics.
And yes, there’s even a fireworks animation when you manage to hit this milestone! 🎉
So you’re saying these websites cost mere cents to host?
Yes! How cool is that?
